Why did you choose JMU?

I chose JMU because of the culture and strength of its liberal arts programs. The university provided lots of resources to support students, and the students I met on campus were supportive and constructive. There was also a priority placed on liberal arts, and I was convinced I would pursue some form of writing program, so it all aligned!

How did your degree from JMU lead you to where you are today?

I was able to lead a few different initiatives at JMU, which gave me a lot of leadership experience. I was the editor of a new arts magazine (gardy loo!), where I helped establish a permanent source of funding for the magazine. That led me to sitting on the JMU Media Board, where I helped with oversight of the Breeze and radio station WXJM. I did not realize it at the time, but the hard issues we debated would be a great source of experience as I took on leadership of GovExec decades later.

What does working for the Federal Government community mean to you?

I love the fact that I help our company helps government leaders make decisions every day. At all levels of government, the leaders are using our news, analysis and decision support tools to improve their own work and the performance of their agencies. We literally have raving fans who I meet at the grocery store or on the sidelines of a soccer field. Whenever I need to get inspired, I just remember their stories and I am re-energized.
